The Chinese architecture very vividly represents the Chinese culture throughout its glorious history. The most striking characteristic of Chinese architecture is the use of the timber framework. Posts, lintels of the framework carry the whole weight of the house. Wall are mere separation for rooms and carries no load of the house. Windows and roofs have amazing colored flower designs which makes them astonishing. Also, the pillars are crafted with such designs. This shows the rich handwork culture of China.

The idea of a complex courtyard is evident in Chinese architecture. The center of the courtyard houses the main structure. All other pillars and structures lie symmetrically around the courtyard. Every post and pillar has something to convey to its admirer. It has various styles of design depending upon the need. Like the design of palaces varies a lot from residential or religious buildings. The material used also differs from designs.

Depending upon the use of these places, the styles vary. They all have a common technique of building but also have a unique construction method.

  • Imperial architecture- As the name suggests, this style mainly used to construct royal palaces and mausoleums for the emperor. It reflects supremacy in its design. The central building is tall and lavishing beautiful in comparison to other nearby buildings. It has a very symmetrical structure and covers a huge landscape. The tiles used over the central building are yellow to signify royalty.
  • Residential architecture- Various ethnic groups have different styles of architecture. Some people have a courtyard while others don’t. Depending upon the geography of the region, the designs may vary.
  • Religious architecture- Buddhist architecture appeals most distinctly. White Horse Temple is an excellent example of Chinese architecture with Buddhist influence. Moreover, Lord Buddha replaces the dragons here. The Pagodas are unique to this style. It is made up of stone and timber. The magnificence is little lesser than Imperial palaces, though.
